Ángel Vela de la Garza Evia came to us from Monterrey, Mexico. He majored in chemistry-engineering and minored in mathematics. Among his many honors for both his academics and his volunteer service, he received the Robert E. Akins Engineering Prize, the Edward Lee Pinney Prize, and the Nabors Service League McLoughlin Award for Volunteerism. He was a popular residential adviser and a leader among his peers in that area of campus life.
Ángel’s community service as a Bonner Scholar encompassed more than 2,100 hours. He served as the president of English for Speakers of Other Languages and on the leadership team of W&L’s Campus Kitchen. Given that track record, you won’t be surprised to know that he also belongs to Omicron Delta Kappa, and just finished a term as president of W&L’s Alpha Circle of ODK.
After he receives his diploma, he’s headed back to Monterrey, where last year he founded a program called STEMito with a Davis Projects for Peace grant. He’ll continue to lead and develop the program, which introduces kids to science, technology, engineering, and math. Ángel will be working in the petrochemical industry and applying to grad school to study data science. He’s hoping to combine that field with — of course — community service.
