Workday Student registration help can be found at the Workday Student Training Site.
Registration is the initial process of signing up for courses each term. Consistent with W&L’s principle that students bear responsibility for their academic choices and progress, each student selects sections to register into each term. You create a planned (saved) schedule from your Workday Academics dashboard, then when your window opens, you register from your saved schedule. If a class is closed, Workday will automatically add you to the waitlist. The system checks for open seats and for appropriate qualifications, including adviser registration authorization, prerequisites, instructor consent, time conflicts, etc.
Drop/add is the process of adjusting your class schedule during the first few days of each term. All degree-seeking students are required to be registered for a full-time load for each term (12-15 credits during fall and winter terms, three to four credits for spring term).
What are the Steps for Registering for Classes?
Step 1: Complete Onboarding Tasks
To complete the Onboarding task, please proceed to your My Apps dashboard and click on the Workday icon. Once logged in, you may access Onboarding by either clicking the inbox in the top right corner of the page or by clicking the Onboarding statement that appears on the homepage under “Awaiting Your Action.” Please be sure to complete all steps, including the final confirmation step, to ensure that your Onboarding hold is released.
Step 2: Meet with Your Adviser
All students will have active advising holds preventing registration until they meet with their adviser and the adviser removes the hold. Be sure to arrange a meeting with your academic adviser as soon as you are able and well in advance of your priority registration appointment.
Step 3: Add Sections to Your Saved Schedule
View Course Offerings
To view course offerings for the upcoming term, please click on the Global Navigation button in the top left corner beside the W&L logo, and select the “Academics” app. Next, click on “W&L Course Offerings” on the right-side menu. This report has been pre-filtered for the upcoming registration academic period and the academic level. If warranted, you may simply remove the filters you do not want by clicking the “X” next to the appropriate selections. The resulting report will generate a list of all selected offerings for the upcoming term. Use the column headers of the report to select additional filters for your course search, if desired.
Creating Course Schedules
We recommend that you create multiple “saved schedules” in Workday as a means to prepare yourself in case one or more of your selected sections is unavailable at the time you register. Please remember that you should only plan a schedule for up to 15 credits because that is the maximum number of credits allowed for registration. Using the register button on a schedule that exceeds 15 credits will cause an error and you will not be enrolled in any courses, so please be sure to schedule wisely. In addition, you will only use your saved schedule during your initial registration appointment. After your initial appointment, you will register for courses individually, so you need not plan courses first in order to register during open registration.
Detailed instructions (including screenshots) regarding Creating a Course Schedule may be found under Student Resources on the Workday Student help page [see “Create a Course Schedule"].
Course Section Prerequisite Override (Instructor Consent)
As a reminder, instructor consent or “Course Section Prerequisite Overrides” must be initiated by you, the student, as instructors do not have the ability to initiate these requests. Following your request, the instructor will receive an inbox item within Workday that will allow for approval or denial. The instructor also has an option to send back the request (and request more information, for example). While not required, we recommend that you discuss your request with the instructor prior to submission. You will receive a notification via Workday on whether your request was approved. You must still take action to ADD the course if approved; consent does not auto-enroll you into the course.
Detailed instructions (including screenshots) regarding Course Section Prerequisite Overrides may be found under Student Resources on the Workday Student help page [see “Request Course Section Prerequisite Override"].
Step 4: Register for Classes
Registration of Course Sections
Register for classes from your “Saved Schedule” under the “Planning” section of your Academics dashboard. If you have created more than one schedule plan, be sure to pull up your primary schedule that you want to register for ahead of your registration window opening. When your window opens, simply refresh the page and locate the “START REGISTRATION” button to begin the registration process. On the schedule overview screen you are given the option to make changes to sections if multiple sections of a course exist. Once you make changes, or if you are satisfied with your planned sections as is, click the “REGISTER” button to register for your courses.
Detailed instructions (including screenshots) regarding Registration may be found under Student Resources on the Workday Student help page [see “Create a Course Schedule” - the Registration steps begin on page 5].
Waitlist Functionality
In Workday, you are automatically added to the waitlist for any course that is at full capacity when attempting to register from a planned course schedule. Waitlist offers arrive both by email and Workday inbox item. When you receive a waitlist offer, you will need to log into Workday to act on the offer. Currently, students have 24 hours to accept an offer, including holidays and weekends. If you receive an offer for a section for which you no longer intend on enrolling, then please “drop” the request to remove yourself from the waitlist.
Detailed instructions (including screenshots) regarding Waitlisting for a Course may be found under Student Resources on the Workday Student help page [see “How to Accept a Waitlist Offer"].
Troubleshoot Registration Feature
You may use the “Troubleshoot Registration” report to determine why you are unable to register for a course. It may also be used ahead of time to determine your eligibility for a course. You may find this functionality by typing “Troubleshoot Registration” in the search bar.
Detailed instructions (including screenshots) regarding Troubleshooting Registration may be found under Student Resources on the Workday Student help page [see “Troubleshooting Registration"].
NOTE: Continue to look for courses and sections to add to your plan for the registration term, and register into sections until you have a full-time load (12-15 credits in fall and winter terms, and 3-5 credits in spring term).
