One week on campus; three weeks in South Korea
Professors Sybil Prince Nelson
This study abroad course introduces students to the principles and practice of exploratory data analysis (EDA) through immersive, real-world applications in South Korea. Students will collect, visualize, and interpret datasets reflecting cultural, social, environmental, and economic patterns unique to the Korean context. Core topics include descriptive statistics, data visualization, simulation techniques, and introductory statistical modeling. Alongside hands-on statistical work, students will engage in cultural excursions, site visits, and language study to deepen their understanding of how context shapes data collection and interpretation. This course is especially appropriate for math majors, data science minors, or students considering a data-intensive path. Prior programming experience is helpful but not required.

Program fee (paid to W&L): $6,815
Includes programming, airfare, room, a few meals (~1 lunch and ~ 2 dinners), most in-country transportation, and transportation to the airport from W&L.

Additional costs: books, most meals, cell phone, spending money, passport, and visa fees (if applicable).

For further details, please reach out to Professor Prince Nelson.

The information session for this course will take place on October 6, 2025, at 7 pm in Chavis Hall, room 105.
