CIE Summer Grants Frequently Asked Questions

Lotus

The CIE summer grants are funding available to W&L student applicants for summer projects outside the US. Qualifying projects will fall under one of these categories: Faculty-directed research projects or Internships through an approved provider.

Visit the Funding for Students page and follow the instructions to begin an application for your desired project type. You can reach out to the Study Abroad Advisor, Cindy Irby (cirby@wlu.edu) for help getting started.

You must be a currently enrolled W&L student with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and not on academic or disciplinary probation.  CIE summer grant applicants will be required to complete an online grant application. Depending on your chosen project type, you may also need to provide letters of approval from W&L faculty, program provider organizations, or hosting institutions.

The Global Learning Advisory Committee will review applications to ensure they are feasible and thoroughly researched. Grants will be awarded on a rolling basis to all projects with sufficient merit up to the limitations of yearly funding. Money for these grants is drawn from a variety of donor-supported funds which come with certain restrictions, so funding availability may vary based on project type and location.

We hope to notify applicants within two weeks of the application deadline each year.

Your application will be reviewed by the Global Learning Advisory Committee and either approved or dismissed, on a rolling basis. In some cases, applicants may be contacted directly for clarification before a decision is made. We hope to notify applicants within two weeks of the application deadline each year.

Once your application has been approved, a CIE staff member will contact you with an offer of funding. You will need to sign a grant agreement specifying the amount of funding your project will receive, and in which you will agree to certain requirements. The requirements may include responsibility for submitting other documentation, such as receipts for airfare reimbursement, a written report at the conclusion of your project, and a thank you note to the grant fund benefactors, so please review the agreement carefully.
