Fraternity and Sorority Insurance Requirements

All fraternities and sororities at Washington and Lee University, including but not limited to those affiliated with one of our three governing councils, Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council (Panhel), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), must maintain and show proof of insurance per the requirements outlined below.

Organizations must provide a copy of their certificate of insurance (COI) to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Student Affairs on an annual basis and maintain such coverage continuously while the organization is recognized by the University.

Insurance requirements include:

  • Proof of Commercial General Liability insurance with minimum limits of one million ($1,000,000) per occurrence, and two million ($2,000,000) annual aggregate.
  • Proof of coverage for claims arising from alcohol-related incidents, hazing, and sexual misconduct (including abuse). Such coverage shall not be excluded by endorsement.
  • Washington and Lee University must be the certificate holder and listed as an additional insured on the policy. This coverage must be evidenced on the COI and the applicable additional insured endorsements.
  • The COI must also document that this insurance provides primary and non-contributory coverage for the University for claims arising out of the chapter’s activities, events, operations, or the actions of its members.
  • Policies shall provide a written notice to the University at least 30 days prior to cancellation, non-renewal, or material modification.

These insurance requirements shall not be construed as limiting the liability of the fraternity or sorority chapter, nor as an assumption of duty or responsibility by the University for the supervision, control, or management of the organization’s activities or the actions of its members, alumni, advisors, or agents.

Failure to annually submit a COI or maintain insurance with the applicable coverages and endorsements may result in the immediate suspension and/or the loss of University recognition for the respective fraternity or sorority.
