Fraternity and Sorority Life
The popularity of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) at Washington and Lee is a testament to both the camaraderie that the students find within their organizations and the breadth of opportunities that they provide.
Fraternities and sororities exist for the personal and professional development of their members and their community. Our FSL community is founded on principles of scholarship, leadership, friendship, and service and our members strive to exhibit these values in their daily lives.
W&L students pride themselves on being well-rounded, whether they’re members of the Greek system or not. Artsy or outdoorsy, activist or introvert, your Greek affiliation is just one more aspect of your experience.
Governing Councils
The FSL community consists of three governing councils: the Panhellenic Council (Panhellenic), the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and the Interfraternity Council (IFC). These councils promote active engagement in fraternity and sorority life at W&L, provide opportunities for personal development, and govern their respective member organizations.
Fraternity & Sorority Housing
Starting sophomore year, members of Panhellenic sororities and IFC fraternities have the opportunity to live in their chapter’s house. Living in the house counts towards W&L’s residency requirements, and each house its own amenities and living arrangements. Members of NPHC organizations do not have dedicated on-campus housing, however, NPHC members often opt to live together in upper-division housing.
Philanthropy & Service
All of our organizations engage in philanthropic endeavors and community service throughout the year. These range from fundraising, issue awareness, and on-site volunteer activities. Each organization on campus has a specific philanthropy or local cause that they raise money for or volunteer their time to support.

"There are no restrictions in regards to how involved one can or cannot be on campus. For instance, you can be an athlete, active in the Greek system, involved in student government, clubs, etc. It is not hard to see how incredibly unique Washington and Lee truly is, as it allows students to explore so many different avenues and find success in so many ways."
