Improvisation can be a valuable tool for self-exploration, somatic therapy, or movement generation – these are wonderful and deeply worthy applications, but compositional improvisation is another animal entirely. In this class, we will employ a specific approach that researches improvisation as an art form intended for an audience. We will practice multiple improv scores that offer parameters to work within, such as following specific spatial patterns, limiting the number of dancers “in” at a time, or restrictions on timing and dynamics. Scores will be practiced both in small and large groups with discussion and verbal participation throughout. Bring your open mind, playful heart, and curious desire to dive deeper into the art of physical expression. Let’s dance!
