Study Abroad
In general, students who receive financial aid can apply their funding towards a study abroad program. However, the process is not automatic. There are steps the student must take to determine if they will receive aid while studying abroad and to ensure the study abroad institution receives payment.
More About Study Abroad
Receiving Aid for Study Abroad
- Decide on your Study Abroad Program and register through the Center for International Education.
- Attend the Financial Aid Information Session which is usually held in October for winter study abroad, and in March for fall or full year study abroad. Bring details on your program including contact information for the program coordinator at your study abroad institution.
- The Office of Financial Aid will coordinate with your program contact to obtain a consortium agreement outlining cost of attendance information. We will then use W&L tuition plus all other expenses related to the program to determine your full cost of attendance, and from that your eligibility for any university grant or scholarship. A consortium agreement is required for our office to provide a study abroad financial aid package.
- Your Study Abroad Program will provide the W&L Business Office with an invoice for any amount that is paid directly to the program. This will usually include tuition, fees, housing and possibly a meal plan.
- W&L will pay these fees directly to the program and W&L will bill you directly for W&L tuition plus any fees, housing or meal plan amounts that are listed on the program invoice.
- Other expenses related to your program that are not billed by the program are not included in your W&L charges but are part of the total cost of attendance used to determine your aid. These include additional food, other fees, travel, books, and personal/miscellaneous expenses.
- You will be notified once your study abroad aid package is complete and is available online. Review the study abroad award and contact our office with questions. Your aid will be adjusted to reflect the actual costs of your program but is capped at the amount of grant or scholarship you would have received on campus for the term.
- If your grant or scholarship exceeds the amount billed by W&L, and you do not have any other outstanding charges, then a credit will be generated on your student account and you will need to complete a Refund Request Form with the Business Office to allow for the transfer of your credit from your student account to a private banking account.
- Any study abroad credit remaining, after covering W&L tuition and other costs billed to W&L by the program, will be transferred to your private banking account in accordance with the Refund Request Form. If you have a credit, you can use that credit to pay the other expenses related to your program. If there is not a credit generated, any outstanding balance or additional expenses are the responsibility of the student.
Additional Information
- It is assumed that your account balance is zero at the time study abroad aid is applied. Any outstanding balance against the account will reduce your study abroad credit.
- You are expected to pay all deposit and complete any deferments.
