Journalism and strategic communication students must understand the importance of editing in any setting—online, in print, in public relations, and in news. In the course, students develop an ear for language, an eye for design, and the talent to spot factual holes and clumsy organization in writing. As part of their coursework, they also engage in the creative process of designing a magazine during the 12-week term.
2024
The Lexplore magazine was produced by the Journalism 351 class during the 2024 winter term. The students brainstormed themes and ideas, held a focus group to get feedback on the concept and spent countless hours reporting and writing their stories. Special thanks to co-instructor Michael Todd for his photo and design expertise, which helped the students pull together the final publication.
2023
Students designed from scratch a magazine that showcased essays written by students in a history course as they learned about historical memory in Latin America. Students in both courses discovered that stories of indigenous people often were erased and their voices silenced by conquerors who told only one side of the history of the development of several nations.
2022
The Editing students immersed themselves in the creative process of developing a print magazine that showcased the reporting of a Sports Journalism class. They decided as a group everything from fonts and page size to colors schemes and cover design.
