The Joseph Franklin Ellis Newspaper Scholarship was established in 1995 by Joseph F. Ellis of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Class of 1943. Typically, the scholarship is awarded during the junior year and renewed during the senior year, contingent upon a satisfactory academic and personal record. To retain the scholarship, the recipient will be required to remain in the Journalism or Business Journalism sequences in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications until graduation.
Scholarship recipients are selected by the department faculty. The fund is administered by the office of Financial Aid.
Purpose:
Tuition support for Journalism or Business Journalism majors in their junior and senior years.
Funds available:
Approximately $3,500 each year.
Eligibility:
Declared majors in their junior years; preference given to students demonstrating a career interest in newspaper or online journalism.
How to apply:
Submit a resume and a cover letter to the department head outlining activities, interests and career goals. Evidence of journalistic qualifications may include clips or academic work that provides evidence of writing and analytical ability. A discussion of academic and professional plans would support the requirement of a career interest in newspaper or online journalism.
