Applying for Financial Aid
Washington and Lee University provides both need-based and merit-based assistance to international students in each entering class. W&L is need-blind in its admissions decisions, and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need without loans for every admitted student. Awards range from several thousand dollars to the full annual cost of attendance. Admission to Washington and Lee does not guarantee financial assistance.
Merit-Based Aid (Scholarships)
All merit-based aid is awarded through the Johnson Scholarship Program.
Need-Based Aid
The Office of Financial Aid will collect information on the family’s financial situation to make a determination regarding eligibility for need-based aid. A complete financial aid application is required if you wish to be considered for a need-based grant, but if you would like to see an estimated award, please try the W&L International Grant Estimator.
W&L International Need-Based Grant Application Requirements
- All international applicants seeking W&L need-based grant must submit the 2026-27 W&L International Grant Supplement by the deadline for their intended admission round:
- Early Decision I: December 1
- Early Decision II: January 15
- Regular Decision: February 15
- In addition, need-based grant applicants are required to complete the 2026-27 CSS Profile. The CSS Profile can be submitted by the admission round deadline, or if you require a CSS Profile Fee Waiver, please see below:
- A CSS Profile Fee Waiver will be provided for students for whom we are requiring it under the following conditions:
- ED1 applicants who have completed the 2026-27 W&L International Grant Supplement by the December 1 deadline will be provided with a CSS Profile Waiver and will have until December 7 to submit the completed CSS Profile.
- ED2 and RD applicants who have completed the 2026-27 W&L International Grant Supplement by the appropriate deadline and who have been admitted to W&L will be provided with a CSS Profile Waiver alongside their admission offer and will have one week to submit the completed CSS Profile.
- A CSS Profile Fee Waiver will be provided for students for whom we are requiring it under the following conditions:
International need-based grants are provided for four years based on the evaluation of the initial first-year financial aid application. The award increases dollar for dollar with any increase in W&L tuition. Recipients of an International Grant do not need to provide any additional documentation in subsequent years to continue receiving their award. The International Grant is guaranteed for four years but is not eligible for negotiation once a student accepts the offer of admission. International students who accept the offer of admission without grants are not eligible for grants in subsequent years.
