Applying for Financial Aid

Washington and Lee University provides both need-based and merit-based assistance to international students in each entering class. W&L is need-blind in its admissions decisions and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need without loans for every admitted student. Awards range from several thousand dollars to the full annual cost of attendance. Admission to Washington and Lee does not guarantee financial assistance.

Merit-Based Aid (Scholarships)

All merit-based aid is awarded through the Johnson Scholarship Program. 

Need-Based Aid

The Office of Financial Aid will collect information about your family’s financial situation to determine your eligibility for need-based aid. A complete financial aid application is required to be considered for an International Grant. To estimate your potential award, please use the W&L International Grant Estimator.

W&L International Grant Application Requirements

International applicants seeking need-based aid must take one of the following steps by the financial aid deadline for their chosen application round:

• Submit the CSS Profile
  Complete and submit the CSS Profile by the financial aid deadline.
• Request a CSS Profile Fee Waiver
  If the CSS Profile fee presents a financial hardship, submit a CSS Profile Fee Waiver Request through your applicant portal by the financial aid deadline. If admitted to W&L, you will receive a decision on your fee waiver request with your admission decision. You must then submit the CSS Profile within one week, whether or not your fee waiver request is approved, to be considered for need-based aid.

Financial Aid Deadlines

• Early Decision I: Dec. 1, 2026
• Early Decision II: Jan. 15, 2027
• Regular Decision: Feb. 1, 2027

International Grant Terms

International Grants are provided for four years based on the evaluation of the initial first-year financial aid application. The award increases dollar for dollar with any increase in W&L tuition. Recipients do not need to provide additional documentation in subsequent years to continue receiving their award. The grant is guaranteed for four years but is not eligible for negotiation once a student accepts the offer of admission. International students who accept an offer of admission without a grant are not eligible for one in subsequent years.

Monitor the Status of Your Application

Monitor the status of your Financial Aid application online by logging into your W&L Applicant Portal and navigating to your Financial Aid Checklist. All currently required documents will be listed with a status of Awaiting or Received. Documents can be submitted via electronic upload only.
