Types of Aid
Scholarships
Johnson Scholarships cover tuition and fees, housing and food, and $10,000 in funding for a summer experience — a grand total of more than $83,000 per year. Applying for a Johnson Scholarship ensures that you’re considered for other merit scholarships based on geography or special interest.
University Grants
Eligibility for university need-based grants is based on a careful assessment of the family's income and assets. Need-based grants are available to all eligible students who complete the required financial aid documents by the relevant deadline. Grant amounts will vary depending on a family’s financial situation.
Federal Aid
Eligibility for any federally funded need-based grant, federal student and/or parent loan, or federal work-study requires the submission of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students must reapply for these awards each year.
International Aid
Washington and Lee University provides both need-based and merit-based assistance to international students in each entering class. Awards range from several thousand dollars to the full annual cost of attendance.
Work Study
Washington and Lee University has a comprehensive campus employment program available to any student who is currently receiving some form of financial assistance. Students that are awarded Work Study may request positions in academic, administrative, or athletic offices.
QuestBridge
W&L partners with QuestBridge, a national non-profit organization, to assist low-income, high-achieving students with college applications. QuestBridge connects students with admission and scholarships to W&L and 47 other partner colleges and universities.
Veterans Benefits
The Post-9/11 GI Bill pays up to the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition and fees. The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program allows colleges and universities to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed that amount.
