English Proficiency Policy for International Applicants

English Proficiency Policy

Both the classroom and the wider community experience at W&L are small and interactive, and students must arrive on campus ready to engage. All students must demonstrate their English proficiency through their application; applicants should choose one or more methods listed below to highlight their proficiency.

  • Complete all years of secondary school where instruction is conducted in English
  • Complete an IBDP English A course with a score of 6 or 7
  • Duolingo English Test (DET)
  • IELTS
  • TOEFL iBT
  • InitialView Interview

Note: Because there is no additional cost to submit the DET score report, W&L only accepts official results.

Successful applicants typically report proficiency levels at or above the following, though we always consider English proficiency scores in context as part of the overall holistic review:

  • DET: 130
  • IELTS: 7
  • TOEFL: 100
