The First-Year Experience

The First-Year Experience is W&L's effort to introduce new students to campus, assisting students as they develop intellectually, emotionally, and socially. There is a direct connection here between what happens in the classroom and beyond.

Orientation Trips

The Leading Edge

From rock climbing to building a Habitat for Humanity home, for many students, The Leading Edge program is one of their best college memories. Choose from multiple program tracks, including Appalachian Adventure, Volunteer Venture, Archaeology, Freedom Ride, and Sustainability. Each will prepare you for an amazing experience as a First-Year student.

Even for First-Years

Research @ W&L

As a W&L student, you can apply for one of hundreds of research stipends to partner with a professor or undertake an independent research project, on-campus or further afield.

The World in Your Classroom

Global Learning

We educate students to be participants in a global and diverse society by engaging students through coursework, speaker series and cultural programs, and a vibrant and extensive study abroad program.

More than Just the Classroom

Campus Activities

When you enroll at W&L, you join a vibrant, welcoming community. You and your peers will arrive with life experiences from many different places, and together, you will make W&L your own. Our campus is at the center of a small, vibrant, two-college town that offers students many opportunities to become involved in the community and travel around the world.

Get Outdoors. And Stay Outdoors.

The Outing Club

The Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains provide a scenic playground for hikers, cyclists, climbers, paddlers and fly fishers, and the Outing Club is the most popular club on campus. W&L students lead most of the activities, which include backpacking, fly fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, caving, skiing and outdoor cooking.
