Fall Term 2024 Auditions
W&L Dancers Create ...
Under the artistic direction of Jenefer Davies, W&L Dancers Create is a concert of works created, designed and performed by W&L students—a performance that reflects, in theme and style, current undergraduate work in dance. This dance concert showcases the intellectual and creative curiosity within the dance program.
First Year Auditions: September 4, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
Upperclass Auditions: September 10, 5-6:30 p.m.
Location: W&L Dance Studio, 109 S. Jefferson Street (entrance is from the alley)
Audition Information: The purpose of the dance audition is to evaluate the existing technique, musicality, and performative qualities of each individual student with the goal being to cast every student in a role that both celebrates and challenges them. The audition isn’t a high stress situation. The artistic director will teach a modern dance class and evaluate everyone over the course of the hour and a half. The only particular skills necessary are a great collaborative spirit and a desire to create and perform. The company is situated within the contemporary/modern dance genre with opportunities in ballet, jazz, aerial, hiphop, folk dance forms, and others. The company is a wonderful mix of students who’ve studied dance since they were very young, students who have taken classes for a few years, and students new to dance. Everyone is welcome. W&L dance is a family and we all support one another.
Please wear comfortable clothing in which you can move freely. Depending on your past experience this may be leotard and tights, tank top and leggings, t-shirt and sweatpants, etc. Please do not wear shorts. The audition is conducted bare footed. Please pull long hair back. Bring a receptacle for water.
Any questions, please email Jenefer Davies at daviesj@wlu.edu.
Hamlet 50/50
Directed by: Jemma Alix Levy
Adapted by: Vanessa Morosco and Peter Simon Hilton
Written by: William Shakespeare
Hamlet is possibly Shakespeare’s greatest play. But it is also dominated by male roles and a male-focused power structure (the original play includes only two female characters out of more than 20 speaking roles). In their transformative adaptation, Vanessa Morosco and Peter Simon Hilton adjust gender identification and reallocate text to achieve gender equity in roles, text spoken, and character status, consulting with leading academics to ensure the script remains true to the spirit of Shakespeare’s text and retains all of his famous lines. “Bold and brilliant, exhilarating and experimental, Hamlet 50/50 gives us a wholly new and thrilling approach to gender equity in Shakespeare productions...
W&L has commissioned a 90-minute version of the script.
Our production will be the World Premiere of this version; therefore, all artists involved will be credited in the first publication of this shortened script.
