Faculty Resources
Freedom of Expression at Washington and Lee University
Washington and Lee University values the central importance of freedom of expression in a vibrant and intellectually challenging university community. Our commitment to honor, civility, and the free exchange of ideas defines who we are as an educational institution. These commitments often mean discomfort, challenge, and vigorous debate about ideas and the implications of ongoing thought and interpretation. We are committed to the civil and unfettered exchange of ideas, confident that a vibrant intellectual community can withstand disagreement and debate and find common ground even where we disagree.
Employee Resource Groups
Washington and Lee recognizes the value of fostering a strong sense of community among faculty and staff. To support meaningful connections, the Provost’s Office and Human Resources have partnered to offer Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which bring together employees with shared interests and experiences. ERGs are voluntary, employee-led groups open to all faculty and staff. ERGs strengthen our University community by acting as a platform for employees to connect, share experiences, and contribute to a supportive workplace environment.
Faculty Development and Funding Opportunities
There are a range of development and funding sources available to W&L faculty. These include such opportunities as the University Lectures program, pre-tenure and sabbatical leave opportunities, Summer Lenfest Research Grants, and the Summer Scholars Research program. Support is available for faculty who are interested in applying for external grants.
Faculty Mentoring
Washington and Lee stands on a foundation of strong teacher-scholars. Each year, we welcome new faculty members to our community, nurture continuing colleagues, and celebrate the accomplishments of brilliant, dedicated teacher-scholars. Since faculty growth and development constitute the bedrock of W&L’s success, we are dedicated to providing robust support for faculty across the arc of their careers.
