General Rules

  1. No credit for courses that do not meet or exceed W&L in terms of level, nature, and field.
  2. No credit for Precalculus, Trigonometry, College Algebra, Remedial Mathematics, Arithmetic, or other such courses.
  3. For course-equivalency credit, at most 3 credits will be applied to the equivalent course at W&L. If the sending institution awarded more than 3 credits for the course, then the remaining credit will be transferred as general mathematics credit at the appropriate level. Whether the remaining credit is usable for a major or minor in mathematics will be at the discretion of the department.

First-Year Students

  1. No credit for courses that do not meet or exceed W&L in terms of level, nature, and field.
  2. No credit for online courses.
  3. Only courses at the 100 or 200 level will be considered for course-equivalency transfer.
For dual enrollment courses, or for other courses that were taken in a high school setting that awarded college credit, only Calculus I and Calculus II will be considered for course-equivalency credits. Other dual enrollment courses, or courses that were taken in a high school setting that awarded college credit, may be considered for general mathematics credit at the appropriate level and may or may not be usable for a major or minor in mathematics at the discretion of the department.
  4. For courses that were taken in-person at an accredited college or university and taught by college or university instructors of record, course-equivalency credit will be considered and awarded in accordance with W&L’s policy on credit transfer. In no case will courses equivalent to the 300-level or above receive course-equivalency credit for First-Years, but such courses may receive general mathematics credit not usable for a major or minor in mathematics.
