About the Exhibition

In celebration of the Art Museum at Washington and Lee’s 150 years of collecting fine arts, Staniar Gallery jointly presents Influencers: Faculty Highlights from the Art Museum Collection. This exhibition features artwork created by past W&L faculty artists and held in the university’s art collection, highlighting these individuals in their roles as both professors and professional artists. Influencers connects the art department’s past with its current gallery.

Staniar Gallery was opened in 2006 as a pedagogical space and works in tandem with the Art and Art History Department. The gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary and historical works in all media by regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized artists.

Originating in 1875 from a bequest of six American paintings, W&L’s art collection has grown to include roughly 15,000 works of art from around the globe. This collection of paintings, works on paper, photographs, ceramics, and sculpture is used as an interdisciplinary teaching resource by various academic departments and supports the Cultural Heritage and Museums Studies Minor, providing student opportunities for hands-on experiences in gallery and museum settings. Integrated into the fabric of the campus, the art collection also enriches the university.
