Note: The course outlines below do not distinguish between Distribution and further course requirements. In selecting courses, remember that at least one course needs to be taken from at least two of the following three categories: Art History & Literature, Other Humanities, and Social Sciences. Course Outlines

Year 1 

  • Fall Term: Arabic 1101 (4 credits)
  • Winter Term: Arabic 1102 (4 credits) 

Also, at least one other course during the academic year (fall, winter, or spring) that counts toward the MESA minor by default (3 credits). See the list of eligible courses in the Middle East and South Asia Studies section of the University Catalog.

By the end of year 1, students will have completed the General Education Language Requirement (Arabic) and at least 3/7 courses for the MESA minor.

Year 2 

During the academic year (fall, winter, or spring), at least one course that counts toward the MESA minor by default (ideally in an area of possible Major interest) (3 credits).

By the end of year 2, students will have completed at least 4/7 courses for the minor.

Year 3 

  • Fall Term: One course required by major that is MESA-relevant (3 credits)
    • This course can count toward the MESA minor by default, or it can be taught by MESA-affiliated faculty and include a significant MESA-relevant paper/project.
    • If none of the courses in your major count toward the MESA minor, and if there are no MESA-affiliated faculty in your major field, the course taken this term must count toward the MESA minor by default.
  • Winter Term: One course required by major that is MESA-relevant (3 credits)
    • This course can count toward the MESA minor by default, or it can be taught by MESA-affiliated faculty and include a significant MESA-relevant paper/project.
    • If none of the courses in your major count toward the MESA minor, and if there are no MESA-affiliated faculty in your major field, the course taken this term must count toward the MESA minor by default.

By the end of year 3, students will have completed at least 6/7 courses for the minor.

By the end of year 3, students will know whether the required capstone course (MESA 3903) will be offered during winter term senior year.

Year 4

  • Fall Term: Catch up MESA-relevant course, if necessary
    • This course can count toward the minor by default or, if it does not count by default, it can be taught by MESA-affiliated faculty with a significant MESA-relevant paper/project. Note that only two courses can count toward the minor in this (non-default) way.
  • Winter Term: MESA 3903 (Capstone Course, 3 credits) OR, if MESA 3903 not offered, 1 additional course that counts toward the MESA minor by default (3 credits).
