Chinese Placement Test

Rules
- You are taking the test on your honor. No paper, pens, pencils, cell phones, etc. are
allowed while taking the test. - No additional applications (e.g., Word, email, chat) or browser windows are allowed to
be open during testing. - All written responses will be reviewed by EALL department. Any inappropriate
responses (vulgar, violent, etc.) will not be scored.
Testing Instructions
- Go to https://app.avantassessment.com
- Use the Code and Password provided below, but create your own Login Name on the login page.

Password: 6524 - After logging in, the Student Profile screen will appear; enter your First Name, Last Name and in the place of the Student ID write in your last name.
- Read the instructions at the beginning of each section carefully before proceeding.
- Responses to the questions are submitted by using the NEXT button.
- A warning message will appear if too much time is spent on one item. You have the option to add more time; however, if no response is given when the message is displayed you will be logged out of the test.
Reading/Grammar Section
- 20-35 questions that are computer-scored
- Read the question and answers before you attempt to read the passage (this will help guide your reading and help you move through the test more quickly).
- For tests that include a Grammar component, the Grammar items are included in this section of the test.
Writing Section
- One question that will be scored by W&L Chinese instructors
- You will have up to 2500 characters (350-400 words) for the Writing response.
- Provide your response using the target language – do not use English!
- Provide all of the information requested in the prompt and stay on topic
- For some languages, a “clickable keyboard” appears for use in selecting any special letters or characters associated with the language
- Click NEXT when you are finished with the Writing section response.
Completing the Avant PLACE Assessment
- You have not completed the test until you see a screen that says TEST COMPLETE.

Once you have finished the online test, please sign up for a short Zoom conversation with EALL faculty.

Below are detailed steps on how to change a given language to Chinese (simplified) on your laptop.
Windows:
- Open the Settings app (Windows key + I).
- Click on “Time & Language."
- Select “Language & Region."
- Under “Languages,” click “Add a language” to install a new language.
- Choose the desired language and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart your computer to apply the changes.
Mac:
- Open System Settings (previously System Preferences).
- Click on “General."
- Select “Language & Region."
- Choose the preferred language and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Restart your computer to apply the changes.
