Mission and Values Statements

Students in a CBSC class

Mission Statement

Through interdisciplinary study of social, cognitive, and biological processing underlying behavior and thought, the CBSC department prepares students to contribute to a diverse society. In the classroom and laboratory, students build skills in scientific and ethical reasoning, creative problem-solving, and effective communication. We prepare students to critically apply these competencies in personal, professional, and community settings to work both independently and with others from different perspectives and backgrounds.

Values Statement

  1. A safe learning community

We value a community in which students, faculty, and staff can express their authentic selves and discuss difficult topics with respect and understanding.

  2. An inclusive community

We value a community in which all voices are heard, and discussions include a variety of identities and viewpoints. We value elevating voices that have been historically excluded.

  3. An engaged community

We value a community in which students, faculty, and staff foster relationships and actively contribute to the life of the department and university.
