Portugal’s spectacular Douro River Valley and the winding river that courses through this culturally rich region have been aptly designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. We invite you to join us on an exploration of the Douro River region aboard Emerald Cruises’ Emerald Radiance, the class act of Douro River cruising.

Our itinerary begins with two nights in Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city. Here we’ll focus first on the Belem Monumental Quarter, with visits to Jeronimos Monastery and the Belem gardens, and then continue on a walking tour to São Jorge Castle and Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest quarter. On Day 4, we’ll make our way to Porto, visiting Coimbra along the way for a tour of the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Our 7-night cruise will trace the Douro’s path through sun-drenched vineyards, famous for the production of port wine. Among our calls will be the beautifully terraced vineyard of Quinta do Tedo, a renowned 18th-century estate located at the dramatic confluence of the Douro and Dedo rivers. In the historic port town of Vega de Terron, we’ll pause for a glimpse of western Spain and the lush landscapes of the lovely Douro International Nature Park on the opposite bank. In the quaintly Baroque town of Lamego, we’ll choose between guided tours of the town’s museum and elegant 17th-century architecture or the historic Mateus Palace for its lovely gardens. Our itinerary includes a full day cruising the UNESCO-listed Vinhateiro wine region. With a tradition of wine production stretching back 2,000 years, Vinhateiro’s port wines have been world-famous since at least the 18th century. We’ll enjoy a day visit to Salamanca, Spain’s “Golden City,” for lunch and flamenco performance. Returning to Portugal, we’ll call in Pocinho for a choice between the award-winning Côa Valley Museum or the Casa Painova for a tasting of Portuguese almonds, olives and fruit. Our visit to the village Provesende, one of the Douro’s many “secrets,” will offer many glimpses of ancient Portuguese small town life. Our river cruise concludes in the historic port city of Porto with visits to its many historic treasures and a private concert in São Francisco Church.

We urge you to be a part of the W&L Traveller’s inaugural visit to this storied region of Portugal.
