S. Cullum Owings Jr. Fellowship

Application Deadline: March 16

Current sophomores and juniors are invited to apply for the S. Cullum Owings Jr. Fellowship for the 2026-2027 academic year. Cullum was a respected student in the class of 2003 who died in a highway crash during his senior year. The Owings Fellowship perpetuates his commitment to academic and personal integrity. Three Owings Fellows will be chosen to make several visits to secondary and middle schools to foster conversations about academic integrity, an existing honor code or system, and the value of a community of trust. All expenses are covered, and each Fellow receives a tuition credit of $2,500.00 in the fall and winter terms.

We seek students who embrace the W&L Honor System and who would enjoy interactive engagement with younger students. E.C. or Hearing Advisor experience is valued but not required. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. Please apply or encourage a friend to do so.

Apply only by emailing a Word or PDF attachment to Nancy Weisberger, no later than midnight on Monday, March 16, 2026.

Include in your application:

  • An unofficial copy of your transcript (order from Registrar ASAP)
  • Your main campus activities and time commitments for next year
  • 250 words on how your experience and values qualify you
  • Your agreement to make 2-4 out-of-town visits next year (all expenses are covered)
  • Confirmation that you will be on campus for the 2026-27 fall and winter terms
  • Two professors or administrators as references

We will choose and notify finalists for an interview during the week of March 23. Please send questions to any of the current Owings Fellows: Sai Chebrolu, Ben Hulsey, Max Patterson, or to Owings Fellowship Director Beau Dudley.
