
For more than 25 years, George has held positions in higher education as faculty member, academic administrator, college dean, development director, and sponsored-research director. Besides serving for seven years as a faculty member, dean, academic tutor, and director of studies at Oxford University, he was, for three years, the Denyer Johnson Scholar and the Hall-Houghton Research Scholar. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Near Eastern Studies Department and pursued further studies at the Universities of Cambridge, Zurich and Vienna.
At W&L, George also holds the positions of associate provost and professor of classical studies (Department of Classics) and senior research fellow in religion (Department of Religion). In addition, he has served as an adviser to the Cairo Genizah Project at Cambridge. He has presented or published 24 academic papers or articles primarily in the field of early Christianity (Pauline studies) and ancient Judaism (Josephus studies). He has two books to be published, by Oxford University Press and Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, The Netherlands.
George has degrees from the University of California, Berkeley (B.A.), University of Manchester, England (M.A.), and the University of Oxford (D.Phil.).
