Safety On and Off Campus

To: The W&L Community
From: Sidney Evans and Marc Conner
Date: June 27, 2018

We understand that members of the W&L community may have safety concerns in light of the recent surge of visitors, media and protestors in and around Lexington. We have also received reports of leafleting last night by the Ku Klux Klan in the city and Rockbridge County. The views espoused by the KKK and other hate groups are abhorrent and antithetical to the values of Washington and Lee.

As always, our Public Safety office is coordinating with local law enforcement to monitor the situation and take necessary precautions to maintain the safety of our community.

Please be aware of the following resources:

  • Security escorts are available 24/7 to those who would like one. Call Public Safety at x8999. Virtual escorts and emergency help are also available via the LiveSafe app.
  • There is a Student Affairs Dean on Call 24/7 throughout the summer. The dean can be reached through Public Safety at x8999.
  • Students living off campus who have security concerns should contact the local police department at 540-463-9177. In an emergency situation off-campus, dial 911 immediately.
  • Temporary on-campus housing is available to students currently living off campus for the summer. Students who are interested may call the Office of Residence Life at x4070.
  • If you are approached by the media, you are under no obligation to participate in an interview. You should exercise your best judgment in fielding these requests. If you would like advice on how to handle media inquiries, please contact the Media Relations Office at x8459.

If you have any other questions regarding safety procedures, please don't hesitate to contact one of us or Ethan Kipnes, director of public safety.
