When you were in college, what was the most salient difficulty you faced?

In college, I discontinued playing varsity lacrosse after being diagnosed with a heart condition. Being an athlete was a large part of my identity, and the decision to stop playing brought intense grief and shame. The decision-making process became as impactful as the outcome – the tension of holding competing desires, the complexity of choosing between parts of myself, and the ongoing, quiet work of making meaning from a choice that offered no clear resolution. It taught me how to live without neat answers.
