Laura Leigh Birdwell '03

Laura Leigh Birdwell graduated from W&L in 2003 with a BA in Philosophy and received her MA in Literature from St. John’s College in 2006. Her love for the Great Books eventually led her to Great Hearts Academies, a network of non-profit, classical, liberal arts charter schools serving students in grades K-12. The mission of Great Hearts resonated with her own belief that all children are deserving of a college preparatory education regardless of their socioeconomic status. Laura Leigh taught 10th grade Humane Letters and coached middle school girls soccer from 2009-2015 and stepped into the role of Recruitment Officer in 2015. She hopes to hire W&L graduates to become teachers with Great Hearts Academies.

Audrey Walker '05

Audrey Walker graduated from Washington & Lee University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism & Mass Communications. During her time at W&L, Audrey served as the President of the Xi Lambda Chapter of Chi Omega, was a varsity athlete, and an editor for the Trident. After graduation Audrey worked as an associate producer for a television production company in New York City where she realized her passion for working with college students through the company's internship program. She now serves as the Coordinator for Fraternity & Sorority Life at Drexel University.

Taylor Gilfillan '13

Taylor Gilfillan is a Physics / AP Physics 1 teacher and Grade Level Chair at KIPP Sunnyside High School in Houston, Texas. Taylor graduated from Washington and Lee in 2013 with a B.S. in Physics with Honors. During his time at W&L, Taylor developed his passion for servant leadership through his service in many organizations which led to his recognition as the John W. Elrod 2012-2013 General of the Year.

Joe Porter '03

Several years after working as a student caller and manager for W&L's Annual Fund, Joe accepted a position directing the student phonathon at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. He advanced to roles in Skidmore's annual fund, working with volunteers and donors, and leadership gifts, maintaining philanthropic relationships with alumni in various regions throughout the country. He leads a team of six gift officers in his current role as Director of Leadership Gifts. Joe graduated from Washington and Lee in 2003 with a degree in History.

Cassie Hunt '01

Cassie graduated from Washington and Lee in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater. Her career has been entirely spent in advancement (alumni relations, fundraising, communications). Cassie worked at W&L for almost nine years (Director of Annual Giving, Director of Advancement Operations) and then joined Bentz Whaley Flessner, a national consulting firm for nonprofit Advancement. There she worked with clients in higher education, healthcare, arts and cultural organizations to improve their fundraising capacity and efficiency. Cassie joined the University of Richmond in December 2011 as a consultant and joined full time in July 2012 as Director of Advancement Interactive. She returned to W&L as the Director of Prospect Development and Analytics in 2015.

Erin Nelson '94

Erin participated in the JET Program and lived in Japan for two years after graduating. After that she worked in DC for two years for the Japanese government before getting her Master of Arts in Japanese Literature. Erin worked as an analyst/linguist for the Director of National Intelligence for 5 years before leaving her career to get married. Later she began a career in education, and is currently Director of Advancement at The American School in Japan (Tokyo).
