Professor Ballenger graduated from Washington and Lee in 1976 with a B.S. in Natural Science and Mathematics. He joined the Williams School faculty in January 2002. Prior to earning his doctorate in Management Information Systems, Professor Ballenger worked for Unisys Corporation for more than eleven years in a variety of information technology related positions. Professor Ballenger was a member of the faculty at Babson College for two years and then served as executive vice president of ServNET Technologies of Charlotte, North Carolina. He spent 2½ years at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) as an Assistant Professor of Information Systems and Accounting, where he received the Undergraduate Outstanding Teaching Award. While at UAH he was instrumental in developing an e-commerce major. Before returning to W&L Professor Ballenger was an Assistant Professor of Information Systems at Wake Forest University in the Calloway School of Business and Accountancy.

While at W&L Professor Ballenger has served on a wide variety of University and Williams School committees. He chaired the Information Technology Advisory Committee for years and the Committee to Recommend Changes to the Faculty Tenure and Promotion Procedures. He also designed and managed the development of Washington and Lee's first totally online course, Information Technology Literacy. He continues to oversee enhancements and modifications to the course. Professor Ballenger is currently working with a group of faculty across the University to develop a data science curriculum at Washington and Lee.
