Board of Advisors

The Williams School Board of Advisors consists of alumni and parents of Washington and Lee, who offer advice to the Dean and faculty on all areas of the school's curriculum and programs. The board consists of industry leaders from across the country and the world. Members reflect the school's four departments: accounting, business, economics, and politics. Advisors who step down from the board are honored with emeritus status.

Beth joined Northern Trust in 2010 as chief financial officer of Northern Trust Global Investments (NTGI) and later served as head of market and liquidity risk.

Prior to joining Northern Trust in 2010, Beth spent 14 years at JPMorgan Chase (and predecessor organizations), most recently as a principal at Chase Capital Corporation in Chicago. Other roles at the firm included manager, retail banking planning and analysis at JPMorgan Chase Bank, NA and director in the Asset-Backed Finance unit of Banc One Capital Markets, Inc.

Beth earned an MBA in finance from Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a BA in economics and romance languages from Washington and Lee University. In addition to serving on the Williams School Board of Advisors, she is member of the Leader Council of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Beth and her husband reside in Chicago with their three daughters.

Amy Bohutinsky '97

Amy is chief operating officer of Zillow Group, a portfolio of the largest and most vibrant real estate and home-related brands in the world, including consumer brands Zillow, Trulia, HotPads, StreetEasy and RealEstate.com.

As COO, Amy oversees Zillow Group's people organization, as well as marketing, communications and consumer care.

Amy is a recognized leader in her field. In 2017, she was named the most powerful woman in real estate in the annual Swanepoel 200 Power List. Additionally, Amy has been recognized in Inman News' list of The Real Estate Influencers of 2017, Direct Marketing News' Marketing Hall of Femme 2014, HousingWire's 2014 Women of Influence and Puget Sound Business Journal's 40 Under 40 in 2012. Amy also lends her expertise on the boards of directors of Avvo and HotelTonight. Before joining Zillow, Amy ran communications for Hotwire, a discount travel site, from launch through its $675 million acquisition by IAC/InterActiveCorp in 2003.

She started her career as a broadcast journalist, working for various CBS, NBC and ABC affiliates. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications from Washington and Lee University.

Chris Cerone '90

Chris is vice president for global government affairs for Zimmer Biomet, based in Washington, D.C. 

He joined Zimmer in 2004 and started the company's government affairs function. He has responsibility for establishing and administering the company's advocacy activities on a variety of state, federal and international policy issues.

Chris also served as president of the Indiana Medical Device Manufacturers Council (2012-2013), which is the leading medical device trade group in the state of Indiana. Chris joined Zimmer from AdvaMed, where he held the position of associate vice president, global strategy and analysis, leading the medical device association's initiatives in key European markets and starting up the association's China program. Chris also worked for Eli Lilly and Company (1995-2000). His professional experience also includes a stint with the U.S. Department of Commerce (1992-1995) as an International Trade Specialist.

Chris holds a Master of Arts degree in international affairs from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Washington and Lee University.

John H. Church '87

John is a managing director and head of the Industrials Investment Banking group at Wells Fargo Securities, which provides M&A and capital structure advice to companies across a wide variety of industrial sectors.

He is a member of the Investment Banking and Capital Markets Operating Committee and Fixed Income Commitment Committee, and co-chair of the Early Talent Steering Committee. John joined Wells Fargo in 2007 from J.P. Morgan. He began his investment banking career at Dillon Read in the early 1990's.

John earned a BA in economics from Washington and Lee University and an MBA at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business. On behalf of Wells Fargo, he is an active recruiter of talent at both schools. John resides in New York City with his wife Kim and their three young sons Jack, Davis and Hayden. He has been active in a number of youth-oriented organizations, typically involving education, lacrosse or fish.

John S. "Jay" Darden '93

Jay Darden is a partner in the Investigations and White Collar Defense practice at Paul Hastings LLP in Washington, D.C.

Jay defends companies and individuals in white collar criminal matters and government investigations, such as allegations of bribery and corruption under the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA); allegations of health care fraud and abuse under the False Claims Act; and other white collar matters.

From 2006 to 2010, Jay was a federal prosecutor with the DOJ's Criminal Division in Washington, focusing on health care fraud, anti-kickback violations, and bribery under the FCPA.

Ellen de Alessandrini

Ellen is Head of NA Flow Credit & EM Credit Sales for North America and Europe.

She has been with Citi for over 20 years in the Markets Business beginning in International Rate Sales and then Emerging Market Sales and Flow Credit Sales. She is a graduate of the University of Texas (Bachelor of Business Administration, Magna Cum Laude) and The Wharton Business School (graduated with distinction).

She began her career as a CPA with Peat Marwick Mitchell and Co before transitioning to investment banking at Drexel Burnham Lambert and McFarland Dewey & Co.  Ellen has been actively involved in recruiting and diversity efforts as the past co-head of the Citi North America Markets Diversity Committee and co-head of the Markets Steering Committee for Recruiting. In addition to serving on The Williams School Board of Advisors, she also serves on the Advisory Council for Woodberry Forest School.

Ellen is a native Texan, residing in New York City, where she lives with her husband, Enrico '84 and their son, Giulio.

John A. Ebner '91

John serves as chief financial officer of Westrock Asset Management, an alternative asset management firm.

In this role, he is responsible for all finance, accounting, tax, portfolio valuation, financial reporting, and investor reporting. John is a member of the Investment Committee and the Risk Committee. He has over 20 years of corporate finance and strategic advisory experience. Previously, he served as Chief Financial Officer of Interline Brands.

Before joining Interline Brands, he worked at Alltel Corporation for 13 years in a variety of strategic and operating roles primarily focused on mergers and acquisitions as assistant to the president and chief executive officer, and corporate finance activities as treasurer and senior vice president of investor relations. He began his career in investment banking with Stephens Inc. and J.P. Morgan.

He holds a BS in Business Administration and Accounting from Washington and Lee University and an MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia.

In addition to the Williams School Board of Advisors, Cliff serves on the boards of several startup ventures and entrepreneurial support organizations. He has received numerous professional awards, including being named to Hot Topic's "Top 100 Entrepreneurship Professors Worldwide," St. Louis County's "Outstanding Entrepreneur Award," and St. Louis Business Journal's "Top 30 Under 30" and "Top 40 Under 40" lists.

Lawrence J. "Jim" Lawson III '77

Jim is Chairman and Global Co-CEO of Lincoln International, one of the leading middle market investment banks with 19 offices in 14 countries. Jim's responsibilities include leading the strategy and marketing activities of the firm. He has helped start investment banking businesses in the Americas (Brazil and U.S.), Asia (China, India and Japan) and Europe (France, Russia, Spain and the U.K.).  

In 1977, Jim graduated from Washington & Lee. He began his career at KPMG and earned his CPA. He then attended the University of Chicago and received a MBA. Jim joined PaineWebber (now UBS) as an investment banker, working in both New York and Chicago. In 1996, together with three others, he started Lincoln International. In addition to Lincoln International, Jim has been a founding executive/owner in two other businesses: a private equity firm and an office supplies company. 

Jim and his wife, Wende, have two children, Grace Anne and James (W&L class of 2021), and live in Chicago.    

Danielle Maurer '98

Danielle joined the Fierce Government Relations in March of 2011, after spending 12 years in various governmental and non-governmental positions in Washington, D.C.

On Capitol Hill, Danielle served as director of member services for Speaker of the House John Boehner. She also spent three years as director of federal government relations for pension giant TIAA CREF, handling investment, retirement, pension and real estate investment issues.

Danielle previously served as senior floor assistant for the House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and Deputy Associate Director of Legislative Affairs for OMB under now Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. She began her career as a staff assistant - and later professional staff member - for the House Rules Committee, serving under Chairmen Gerry Solomon and David Dreier. Her responsibilities included handling defense, foreign affairs, agriculture, budget and small business issues. The New York native and her family live in Arlington, Virginia.

John E. McManus '91

John is the president and founder of The McManus Group LLC, a consulting firm specializing in strategic policy and political counsel and advocacy for health care clients with issues before Congress and the Administration.

Prior to founding The McManus Group, John served Chairman Bill Thomas as the staff director of the Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, where he led the policy development, negotiations and drafting of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003. Before working for Chairman Thomas on Capitol Hill, John worked for Eli Lilly & Company as a senior associate from 1994-97 and for the Maryland House of Delegates from 1993-94 as a research analyst.

John earned his Master of Public Policy from Duke University and Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Lee University.

Carol Dannelly O'Kelley '91

She has more than 20 years of technology marketing and operations experience, ranging from startups to multi-hundred million dollar global businesses.

Previously, Carol was chief marketing officer of RedPrairie, now operated as JDA. She led global strategy and marketing during a time of rapid growth for the company. Before RedPrairie, Carol was vice president and chief of staff of Oracle's global business unit for retail, which acquired and successfully integrated numerous leading retail technology companies. Prior to that, she was director of corporate and Americas marketing at Manhattan Associates, the world's leading provider of supply chain management solutions.

Carol graduated from Washington and Lee University with a BA in English. She serves on the Advisory Board of Venture Atlanta.

John M. Oliver '87

John leads PwC's Financial Services Assurance Business Advisory practice. In this capacity, he oversees PwC's Consumer Finance, Actuarial and Financial Markets consulting services. In addition to his managerial duties, John leads specific audit and consulting services to entities in the financial markets arena.

During his 30 year career, John has lead audit and consulting services for a full spectrum of financial institutions including government-sponsored mortgage entities, commercial and residential mortgage banks, investment companies and student lending institutions. He is a member of PwC's National Financial Services executive team which manages service delivery to PwC's Financial Services clients throughout the country.

John is a 1987 graduate of Washington and Lee University, a CPA, a member of the AICPA, and a board member of Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area. He and his wife, Cindy, live in Chevy Chase, MD with their two boys Mitchell and Miles ('21).

James M. "Jim" Rallo '88

Jim serves as the president of the Retail Supply Chain Group which helps hundreds of the world's top retailers and consumer OEMs unlock strategic value in their reverse supply chain, while enhancing and protecting their brands.

Jim previously served as CFO and treasurer of Liquidity Services from 2005 to 2015. Liquidity Services has grown more than 10 times in top line sales and acquired a total of eight companies in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K, since Jim joined the Company. Jim holds an MBA from the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland and a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University. He is a CPA and serves as a founding member on the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business Strategic CFO Roundtable.

Jim was recognized with top honors from the Tech Council of Maryland as CFO of the Year in 2013 and by the Northern Virginia Technology Council with the Public Company CFO of the Year Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2009.

John W. Robinson III '94

He is the former executive vice president of Aaron's, Inc. and chief executive officer of Progressive Leasing, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aaron's, Inc.

Prior to joining Progressive Leasing, John was the president and COO of TMX Finance LLC (dba TitleMax), one of the largest auto title lenders in the U.S. Previous to TMX, he worked in the investment banking groups at Morgan Stanley, Lehman Brothers, and Wheat First Butcher Singer. 

John holds a BA in economics from Washington and Lee University, cum laude, where he also received the 1994 Pres Brown Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year Award. He received his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College where he was a Tuck Scholar.  Additionally, John earned his Chartered Financial Analyst designation. In addition to the Williams School Board of Advisors, John is a member of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a National Trustee for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Jackson R. Sharman III '83

Jack has an active white-collar criminal defense, internal-investigations and corporate compliance practice.

He blogs as "White Collar Wire" (at http://jacksharman.com) and publishes a Twitter feed (@WhiteCollarWire) devoted to news, commentary and cases involving white-collar criminal and government-enforcement matters. Most recently, he was Special Counsel to the Alabama House Judiciary Committee for the impeachment investigation of Governor Robert Bentley. Jack's role was to advise the Committee on all legal and procedural issues related to the impeachment investigation.

Before coming to Lightfoot, he was Special Counsel to the House Financial Services Committee for the Whitewater/Madison Guaranty investigation involving President Clinton, which culminated in four days of nationally-televised hearings. He holds degrees from Harvard Law School; Washington University in St. Louis; the Institute for European Studies (Geneva, Switzerland); and Washington and Lee University.  Jack is married to the former Elizabeth Cahill. They have two children: Mathilde '20 and Jackson.

Thomas J. Sheehan, Jr. '90

Thomas graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1990, and he received his MBA in 1995 from the University of North Carolina as a Dean's Scholar. He is a past treasurer/board member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (New York) and a board trustee of the American School in London. Thomas is a dual citizen of the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and he lives in New York with his wife Jennifer and their three children.

Ross sits on the Arcus Investment Committee and is involved in overall firm strategy.  He can frequently be found opining on the capital markets on CNBC.

Before co-founding Arcus, Ross was a Director in Credit Suisse's Private Banking unit and was previously with Morgan Stanley's Private Wealth Management group in Atlanta and New York City.  Ross began his career in the Corporate Banking Group of First Union National Bank (now Wells Fargo) in Charlotte and was National Sales Director at Conseco/Western National Life in San Francisco.  He holds a BA in Economics from Washington and Lee University and an MBA from Columbia University. Ross was formerly on the Board of the Jacksonville based Florida Theatre and is the past Chair of the Investment Committee and Board member of The Sheltering Arms, based in Atlanta.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and Atlanta based Mortgage Asset Exchange, Inc. 

He lives in Atlanta and Jacksonville with his wife, Sally.  They have four children; Will, W&L class of 2019, and Sophie, Wyatt and Mary Preston, all of whom attend Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va.  

Howard W. Smith III '80

Howard was born on October 8, 1958 and grew up in Alexandria, VA.

He attended Episcopal HIgh School, class of 1976, and then he went on to Washington and Lee University, class of 1980, earning a BA in economics. Howard was married to his wife, Page Lane Smith in 1988. Page is from Rocky Mount, NC and attended UNC as a member of the class of 1983. Howard and Page reside in Washington, DC and have 5 children: Martha Macon Ashburner Smith (25), Marion Hungerford Smith (23), Howard "Worth" Smith IV (22), Annie Degraffenried Smith (18), Elizabeth "Sydney" Smith (11). Howard is a member of the Chevy Chase Club and the Metropolitan Club of Washington, DC.

Howard's career from 1980 to present has been working at Walker & Dunlop Inc. as a mortgage banker, where he is now a board member, president and COO. He serves on the Board of Episcopal High School and is the Former Senior Warden of Christ Church Georgetown. Howard is an avid golfer, outdoorsmen and reader.
