DMV Proof of Residency W&L provides proof of residency for students applying to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires several documents when a person applies for a driver's license or Identification (ID) card. The University Registrar's office can prepare for current students one of the required documents, a proof of Virginia residency.

You should submit to the University Registrar both a transcript request and a request for a DMV letter. The official enrollment letter we prepare indicates that you are a student, along with your physical living address in the Lexington area, as well as a printed, official transcript. Taken together, these two documents are a single proof of Virginia residency document for the DMV.

W&L cannot provide proof of residency for REAL ID licenses, as the DMV will not take a transcript without an address on it as a Virginia residency document.

The DMV also requires other documents from U.S. citizens and Non-U.S. citizens when applying for licenses or IDs. These documents are listed at www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/dmv141.pdf.
