Student Travel Support

The department has a number internal methods of funding students needs regarding research and travel: The Todd Jones Award, The Klinedinst fund, and occasionally internal department funds. They are open to both theater and dance students unless noted otherwise.

Todd Jones

Background:
The Todd Jones '85 Memorial Scholarship was established in 1999 by family and friends to honor the memory of Todd Jones (1963-1996). Preference is given to students with a demonstrated interest in music and drama. Award recipients receive funds for a travel study experience that will enhance their own artistic development and thereby strengthen the performing arts on campus.

Process:
Write a brief narrative statement, no more than one page, explaining the need and how it supports the advancement of your education in Theater and/or Dance. Submit your narrative statement and a budget outlining the estimated expenses to the department's Administrative Assistant by the end of 7th week of the Winter term ( the week after Washington Break). Late submissions will not be considered. The department will announce it's decision by the end of the winter term.

Finally, recipients of Todd Jones award must attend the Arts Award Ceremony at the end of the school year. Also, they must share their experience with their peers in the form of a presentation in the Fall term, and write a thank you letter that will be given to the contributors of the Todd Jones fund.

Klinedinst

Background:
The Cynthia D. Klinedinst Fund for Theater, established in 2007 by a gift from Cynthia D. Klinedinst, supports the teaching and performance of theater, both in and outside the classroom at Washington and Lee University. A portion of the fund is awarded annually to theater majors or minors with particularly meritorious internship projects to help defray travel and living expenses. This fund is limited to theater students.

Department of Theater, Dance, and Film Studies Summer Grants

The Department of Theater, Dance, and Film Studies offers support for summer internships, masterclasses, and training programs through the Todd D. Jones and Cynthia D. Klinedinst funds. These off-campus experiences enhance students' academic and experiential growth outside of the classroom and provide opportunities that might not otherwise be possible. Learn more and view the application for the Summer Grants.

Internal Departmental Support

Occasionally, the department allocates money from it's budget to assist majors and minors to travel to theater or dance conferences, internships and other needs related to supporting the advancement of a student's education in theater or dance.

Process:
Write a brief narrative statement, no more than one page, explaining the need and how it supports the advancement of your education in Theater and/or Dance. Submit your narrative statement and a budget outlining the estimated expenses to the department's Administrative Assistant. This money is not available every year, so all majors and minors will be notified with the specific deadlines and details when it is available. Late submissions will not be considered. This is open to all majors and minors in the department.
