Sustainability Commitments

Tallories Declaration

President Ken Ruscio signed the Tallories Declaration on Jan. 1, 2007. The Declaration is a commitment to "a ten-point action plan for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations and outreach at colleges and universities." The Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future is the Secretariat for the Declaration, which has been signed by over 418 presidents, rectors and chancellors of institutions around the world.

Presidents' Climate Commitment

President Ken Ruscio signed the Presidents' Climate Commitment on March 6, 2007 as a charter member. The American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment has been signed by the presidents and chancellors of over 676 institutions. These institutions have pledged to develop a plan to achieve climate neutrality, integrate the principles of sustainability into the curriculum and to exercise leadership in sustainability through actions and education.

Washington and Lee has also pledged to make the climate neutrality plan and any green house gas inventories or other report public. The University has chosen to purchase only Energy Star products and to participate in the Waste Minimization component of the annual collegiate Recyclemania competition as a beginning point for achieving climate neutrality.
