What to Compost

What can be composted

Most organic matter can be composted. Listed below are some common materials that should go into the compost bin:

  • coffee grounds and filters
  • eggshells
  • freezer-burned foods (remove packaging first)
  • fruits and vegetables
  • grass clippings and yard trimmings
  • grains (pasta, bread, etc.)
  • hair and fur
  • houseplants
  • leaves
  • lint
  • nut shells
  • manure (cow, horse, etc.)
  • paper towels and brown paper bags (can be composted or recycled)
  • plastics that say "compostable" on them in lieu of a recycling symbol
  • shredded newspaper
  • tea and tea bags
  • wood chips and sawdust

What CANNOT be composted

  • coal or charcoal ash
  • condiment packets
  • chewing gum
  • diseased or insect-ridden plants
  • glass (can be recycled)
  • inorganic materials (polyester, styrofoam, plastic, acrylic, rubber, etc.)
  • metal (can be recycled)
  • paper product which has the potential to be contaminated with bodily fluids
  • pet wastes (dog or cat wastes, cat litter, etc.)
