Sustainability at W&L

Washington and Lee's motto is Non Incautus Futuri - not unmindful of the future. The University has been preparing students for a life of service as future leaders for over 250 years. Our present challenge is to lead the way to a more sustainable future by developing a learning community whose members are mindful of their responsibility to future generations, sensitive to the stewardship of natural resources, and equitable in their social and economic relationships.

W&L's Commitment

Washington and Lee University is committed to excellence in environmental, health and safety stewardship on our campus and in the larger community of which we are a part.

University Initiatives

We seek to continuously find new and innovative ways to improve sustainability efforts on campus.

Community Outreach

Community Outreach encompasses a number of programs that have a direct relationship with the Rockbridge community as well as Service Learning experiences that are part of the academic programs of the University. There are also a number of student organizations that do volunteer service projects in Rockbridge County and throughout the world.

Recycling & Waste Minimization

The recycling program at Washington and Lee University is operated by University Facilities and is guided by the University's motto: non incautus futuri, not unmindful of the future. University Facilities, with the assistance of the University Sustainability Committee, has developed policies and programs to minimize waste in order to create a more sustainable campus.
