New Member Education Guidelines

New Members should be selected because chapter members feel the person will make positive contributions to the organization through their commitment to lifelong membership and service as a leader. It should be obvious that such members will contribute to the strength of the organization and add value to its reputation in seeking to meet national standards.

Following the close of recruitment, New Member Education (NME) is a period of time that facilitates much reflection for students recently joining the Greek community. Through a number of positive, low-risk programs and team-building experiences, a strong NME experience should:

  1. Teach new members about the history and values of their organization,
  2. Aid new members in defining how their personal values fit into the context of their chapter,
  3. Further develop one's interpersonal relationships with other members.

It is our hope that at the end of NME, fraternity and sorority members will feel confident in their ability to consistently make responsible decisions that align with the values of their organization.

The current guidelines are consistent with Washington and Lee's mission statement, as well as the rules of the national Greek organizations represented on our campus. We, as a unified Greek community, must continue our work to establish lasting credibility--making responsible and consistent choices which reflect honesty, integrity, and civility. There is a middle ground that allows Greek Life and NME programming to be fun, yet safe and positive for everyone involved. Achieving and sustaining that middle ground requires all new and existing members to practice awareness, balance, and respect.

All NME Programs at W&L shall be consistent with the core values of the University, including honor and respect for others. They should not inhibit the pursuit of academic excellence or detract from a new member's personal dignity. A healthy NME program will encourage participation in activities such as outdoor adventures (hiking, kayaking, caving, etc.), participation in the ropes course, attending or watching athletic events, coordinating service projects, hosting study sessions, etc.
