Being a Good Neighbor

Living off campus is a much different experience from living in a University residence hall. When living off campus, you may be living in close proximity of families with children, working professionals, the elderly, and other individuals from many different walks of life with different customs, traditions, life schedules, and beliefs. As such, the communities of Lexington City and Rockbridge County have a high expectation of Washington and Lee Students to upholding the University traditions of honor, integrity, and civility in how we treat others when living off campus.

What does this mean exactly?

Student Code of Conduct

As a Washington and Lee student, you are bound by relevant portions of the student handbook off campus. Guide your interactions with your neighbors by following the mission of Washington and Lee University and conducting yourself with honor, integrity, and civility.

Campus Community Coalition

In support of the Washington and Lee University Mission and Honor System, the Campus Community Coalition was founded to promote and facilitate progressive communication, cooperation, and collaboration between the student body, neighboring community, landlords, law enforcement, and the University administration to address community concerns.

Noise

You would not appreciate your neighbors' making noise while you study for exams. In the same way, your neighbors will not appreciate your making excessive noise. That doesn't simply mean you have to observe the local noise ordinance. You also must be considerate of your neighbors by doing such things as keeping your audio equipment at reasonable levels and ensuring that your guests do not create noise disturbances.

Trash

You (and your landlord) are responsible for maintaining a safe, clean and attractive environment. In particular, cups, cans and other trash that remains in your yard after a party is an eyesore for neighbors. You should dispose of all garbage regularly and appropriately. After a party, your property should be cleaned within 24 hours.

Parking and Traffic

Please comply with all applicable laws, and make sure invited guests do the same. Make traffic safety a priority. Do not park illegally, block neighbors' driveways, public alleys or sidewalks, the police department or sheriff's office may cite you for violations. Plan ahead of time for guest parking at social events. Many streets and roads in Lexington and Rockbridge County are narrow and dangerous without the added problem of illegally parked vehicles.

Communicate

The best way to be a good neighbor is to talk to your neighbors. Introduce yourself when you move in. Become an active member of your neighborhood. Show your neighbors respect, and you will gain their respect as well.
