Types of Therapy
There are several different types of therapy that vary in terms of their theory for what causes psychological problems and their focus and goals for treatment. While all forms of therapy are effective, some therapy modalities may better fit your needs than others. Here is a list of some of the most common types of therapy used at the University Counseling Center.
1. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): focuses on how faulty reasoning can lead to biases that contribute to psychological problems. Therapy focuses on helping clients identify types of cognitive bias and engage in reality testing.
2. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): focuses on learning skills that help clients identify and regulate strong emotions. This form of therapy is particularly helpful for students who struggle with self-harm, suicidal ideation, and trauma.
3. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): a specific type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that focuses on helping clients address symptoms related to trauma such as physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault, natural disasters.
4. Insight-Oriented Therapy: focuses on conflicts that occurred early in life (e.g., family disruption or conflict, unreliable caregivers, grief, loss) that continue to impact the student currently.
5. Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): focuses on disruptions in relationships such as coming to college, breakups, divorce. Treatment focuses on helping clients identify and express feelings related to the problem and develop skills to improve their social functioning.
6. Motivational Enhancement Therapy: focuses on helping clients resolve their ambivalence about engaging in treatment and stopping their alcohol or drug use. In therapy clients learn to identify internally motivated reasons for changing their behavior.
