Six-Day Getaway to Amsterdam October 7-13, 2017
The latest of our popular getaway destinations, Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands, is bound to appeal to those with limited time and yet an irrepressible urge to travel. Like our other getaways, our program in Amsterdam is remarkably generous for the price. This package includes round-trip airfare from Washington, D.C., several meals, entrances, gratuities, and five nights at the Mercure Hotel Amsterdam Centre Canal District. The four-star hotel is especially convenient to the major museums and for walking tours and independent excursions.
With its marvelous artistic heritage, quaint houses with gabled facades, extensive canal system, and ubiquitous bicycles, Amsterdam is arguably Europe's most colorful capital. Along with visits to the world-renowned Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, our program will include an iconic canal cruise-the best way to tour the city-and excursions to the Hague and Delft, the home of Vermeer and the famous blue-and-white Delft pottery. The highlight of our excursion to the Hague will be our visit to the Mauritshuis, famous for its extraordinary collection of paintings by Vermeer and other Dutch masters. We'll also enjoy opportunities for independent time in Amsterdam, as well as an optional excursion to Antwerp, the home of Rubens.
This tour will be led by W&L art historian George Bent, whose expertise in European painting has enhanced many W&L Traveller programs in Europe. Like most of our getaway programs, this tour is likely to fill at 35 travelers. Those wishing to prepare themselves with a deeper understanding of the history and culture of the Dutch will want to attend this summer's Alumni College on Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age, July 16-19. Bent will be joined by other W&L colleagues for this vivid glimpse of Holland's most remarkable era.
