Opportunities for Students
The John M. McDaniel Fund
The John M. McDaniel Fund is a permanently endowed fund established in 2014 by classmates, friends and former students of John McDaniel ’64 to recognize his outstanding career as a Professor of Anthropology/Archaeology at his alma mater. The purpose of the fund is to support community outreach in the Anthropology/Archaeology program and will be administered by the director of the programs.
James G. Leyburn Scholars Program in Anthropology
The Department offers the opportunity for students to participate in archaeological and ethnographic fieldwork, as well as cultural resource management, during the summer. This has been done under the auspices of the James G. Leyburn program, an endowed program that allows undergraduates and alumni working in anthropology to compete for stipends.
The Emory Kimbrough Jr. Fund
The Kimbrough Fund provides general support for sociology students and faculty in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. It is administered by the chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology in consultation with the Provost.
The Emory Kimbrough Jr. Prize
This prize is awarded to outstanding senior majors in Sociology and Anthropology.
Honor Societies
The Sociology and Anthropology Department has two national Honors Societies, both founded in 2008. Lambda Alpha is the National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology. Alpha Kappa Delta is the International Sociology Honor Society.
Field Experiences
Students in anthropology and archaeology have the opportunity to take part in a range of field experiences, such as class field trips, the annual Washington and Lee “dig,” and class based projects that require hands-on student engagement.
Work Study at the Anthropology Laboratory
The Anthropology Laboratory employs several work study students a year.
Social Research and Discussion Group
The SRDG is an annual program at the Department of Sociology & Anthropology. Professor Perez and up to 12 students will meet six times during the academic year (fall and winter terms). For an hour, the group will have an informal conversation about a book designated in advance. The goal is to provide students an opportunity to connect with each other and faculty, read books with a social science perspective in mind, and further develop their analytical skills.
Study Abroad Programs
Faculty in the department have offered several Spring Term Abroad options for students, while summer research programs in the United States and abroad are offered through other institutions.
Research Resources
The Department has access to many research resources in sociology and anthropology online and through the Leyburn Library.
