Academic Council

The Provost's Office oversees and supports the work of faculty, academic deans and directors, registrar, information technology services, athletics, and other programs, committees, and functions central to the academic life of the University. The Provost works with other leaders to recruit and retain faculty, students and staff of the highest caliber and to empower them to do their best work together to achieve the outstanding student outcomes that are promised in the institutional mission statement. The Provost also works directly with the President and other Vice Presidents to develop annual budgets and priorities, promote student development, and advance the institution through fund-raising and communication strategies.

The Provost's Office drives activities that move the institution toward the goals implicit in the University's strategic plan and mission statement. On a day to day basis, progress depends on providing the faculty and administrators with accurate and timely information; maintaining sound policies that are applied consistently; effectively distributing resources; and leading with ideas, planning and implementation strategies.

The College

The College is the heart of the W&L liberal arts education. It is the home of twenty-one departments, four interdepartmental majors, and seven interdepartmental programs. Students may earn either the B.A. or B.S. degree in forty different majors, and may also pursue one or more of fifteen minor programs, including Creative Writing, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Environmental Studies, and Museum Studies.

The Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics

Washington and Lee is the only top tier liberal arts college to have a nationally accredited commerce school. The Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics has a full-time faculty of more than 40. Approximately 40 percent of the university's baccalaureate degree candidates are from the School, including many students majoring or minoring in diverse disciplines throughout the undergraduate program.

The School of Law

At W&L Law, as the smallest of the nation's top law schools, with a total enrollment of 424, we strive to create a first year experience that is not only challenging, demanding and stimulating but also personal, collegial and humane.

The Center for International Education

International Education at Washington and Lee strives to create an effective global learning environment by providing leadership, administrative oversight, and broad support for international learning and global engagement.

DeLaney Center

Established in 2021, the DeLaney Center is an interdisciplinary academic forum that promotes teaching and research on race and Southern identity. It serves as a resource for students and faculty in all three of Washington and Lee's academic units - the College, the School of Law, and the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics.

The Harte Center for Teaching and Learning

The Houston H. Harte Center for Teaching and Learning fosters deliberative, innovative conversations among students, faculty, and staff about meaningful ways to learn and teach in a liberal arts environment, with the goal of developing more engaged citizens prepared to face the challenges of a complex world.

ITS

The mission of ITS is to facilitate a technology culture that enables the success of the University's mission through exceptional support and services provided by professional, consultative staff, and secure access to systems, information, and content.

The Mudd Center for Ethics

The Mudd Center for Ethics was established through a gift to the University from award-winning journalist Roger Mudd, a 1950 graduate of W&L. The Mudd Center supports faculty who wish to develop new courses to enhance the study of ethics across the curriculum and engages in programming that fosters serious and sophisticated conversation about public and professional ethics at the University.

Museums

The Museums at W&L advance learning through direct engagement with the collections and facilitate an interdisciplinary appreciation of art, history, and culture. The Museums at W&L consist of the University Chapel & Galleries, the Reeves Museum of Ceramics, and Watson Galleries. Works from the ceramics, art and history collections are also on view in several campus buildings.

Office of Community-Based Learning

The Office of Community-Based Learning coordinates all Washington and Lee community engagement activities institution-wide. Resources are available for students, faculty, staff and community partners.

Office of Fellowships

A full college education cannot exist within the walls of a classroom alone. That’s why we encourage and support students who decide to pursue nationally competitive fellowships. The Office of Fellowships is dedicated to helping students identify and apply for opportunities they feel will most benefit them both during and after their time at W&L.

University Athletics

Washington and Lee University provides its students with a unique athletic program that allows them to pursue athletic excellence without sacrificing their educational experience.

The Washington and Lee University Library includes Leyburn Library and the Telford Science Library. The Wilbur C. Hall Law Library is located in the Law School and is administered separately.

University Registrar

The University Registrar's staff will function together as an "academic service station" to all of the University's constituents in a consistent, accessible, and friendly manner.
