Interim Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy A Message to the Community on September 9, 2014

Earlier this summer I wrote to alert the Washington and Lee community to our comprehensive assessment of current policies and procedures regarding sexual misconduct in response to new guidance from federal agencies. (See my previous communications under "Messages to the Community").
As part of that ongoing assessment, I have adopted an Interim Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy that will be in effect this year. The policy, which also is linked below, provides detailed information about the resources and resolution procedures available to all students and employees. This stand-alone Sexual Misconduct Policy will allow those affected by sexual misconduct easy access to information about the resources and options available to them. I hope you will examine this document at your earliest convenience.
If you have questions about particular situations, please contact Title IX Coordinator Lauren Kozak (firstname.lastname@example.org; 458-4055) or one of the designated professionals listed in the policy. Those individuals are committed to treating these difficult cases fairly and with sensitivity to all involved.
As a result of adopting the Interim Sexual Misconduct Policy, W&L's Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation Policy has been amended to address claims of discrimination/harassment other than those based on sex. That interim policy is also referenced below.
Members of the staff will conduct information sessions about these policies in the next few weeks to inform the community of available resources and to make certain that employees and students know how and to whom they should report allegations of misconduct. This is extremely important information, and I encourage everyone to become familiar with the procedures and resources that are in place.
As I have indicated in previous communications on this issue, respect for one another is a cornerstone of Washington and Lee. Living up to the standards that we set for ourselves requires a conscious, deliberate effort to understand our obligations. We must not tolerate sexual or other discrimination, harassment or assault of any kind.
