PE 195 Ropes Course Facilitation

Course Objective

The objective of this course is intended to provide students with the opportunity to develop fundamental knowledge and skills for planning, facilitating and co-leading adventure based challenge course programs on the Fechnay Challenge Course at Washington and Lee University.

Course Description

In this course students will gain technical and soft skills necessary for programming safe, efficient and meaningful challenge course experiences. Using current industry standards participants will receive training in technical course skills including equipment fitting and maintenance, element set-up/break down, safety policies and procedures for each element, belaying skills and emergency rescue plan. Students will also receive experience in facilitation skills including processing, assessing group needs with an overview of the tenants of experiential education.

Course Requirements

Students will be required to attend all class meetings, lead the class in assigned group activities and show proficiency in all technical skills taught. Students must also show good judgment and be willing to participate while giving and receiving feedback from each other. Prepare for rain or shine, gathering props and necessary equipment prior to class meeting, as all classes will be taught inside and outside of the Pavilion.
