About S.A.B.U.

The purpose of the Student Association for Black Unity (SABU) is to provide support and a network for the exchange of ideas pertinent to the African diaspora. SABU promotes the holistic development of the African diaspora on campus and seeks to create and maintain Black/African American/Caribbean American consciousness, awareness and identity.

The Student Association for Black Unity was formed in the winter of 1971 after 15 Black men, the largest class of Black students at W&L up to this point, matriculated in the previous year. These young Black men sought to create an organization which would allow Black students on campus to speak with one unified voice. After its original founders graduated in '74 and '75, SABU continued to host cultural events and engage in efforts to make the W&L campus more inclusive.
