Nyeema Morgan "I, Rhinoceros"

New York City-based conceptual artist Nyeema Morgan will present works on paper and sculpture in her exhibition I, Rhinoceros. The show's title is derived from German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer's 1515 woodblock print, Rhinoceros, in which he rendered the likeness of an exotic animal he had never seen based only on a second-hand written description. Dürer's print was considered an accurate and truthful representation until the animal was imported to the region revealing the work's glaring discrepancies. The narrative behind the creation of the artist's famed print inspired much of Morgan's work presented in this exhibition, having fueled her on-going thoughts and questions about authenticity and representation. Morgan's works spanning the past eight years outline the artist's interest in visual communication and production and how they shape our understanding of the world. Nyeema Morgan's work has been featured in many exhibitions including the Drawing Center (New York, NY), Art in General and the Studio Museum (New York, NY) and the Bindery Projects (Minneapolis, MN).
