Makerbot Replicator 2x ABS Plastic Extrusion Printer
The IQ center also features a Makerbot Replicator 2X printer. While the ProJet 260 is best for printing small, intricate models, the Makerbot creates durable, inexpensive products. It uses fused deposition modeling to print with PLA, ABS, flexible and dissolvable plastic filaments.
A user-friendly design software, Makerware, can be downloaded at: http://www.makerbot.com/makerware/ and used to format files for the Makerbot. It is also possible to design objects using other modeling software and prepare them for printing using Makerware.
The Makerbot company sponsors an online forum for users to post downloadable, open source models at http://www.thingiverse.com/. These models can be rescaled and customized once downloaded. Although print jobs still take time, this printer offers an affordable access to 3D printing.
