Eligible employees must request parental leave in writing to their supervisor (staff) or department head (faculty) ninety (90) days in advance of the requested leave start date (or as early as possible in the planning phase of an adoption process). The Executive Director of Human Resources approves staff requests and the appropriate Dean approves faculty requests for parental leave. Parental leave is independent of other time off or sick leave benefits and runs concurrently with FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act).
Full- and half-day preschools and afterschool programs
W&L supports nursing mothers by providing reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after the child’s birth. Assistance is provided in locating a place (other than a bathroom) that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public to be used to express breast milk. Refrigeration may be provided by Human Resources for the storage of expressed breast milk during the work day.
Washington and Lee hosts area summer camp programs at a camp fair each spring in Elrod Commons. This is a great opportunity to meet with representatives from the camps and get a head start on planning your child's summer. We also maintain a listing of summer camps for your reference.
