Modified Oral Proficiency Interviews

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) works closely with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) in providing its teachers the opportunity to undergo free training on the administration of the Modified Oral Proficiency Interview.

The Global Discovery Laboratories in the Ruscio Center for Global Learning is host to these professional development workshops which are offered on the campus of Washington and Lee University during the summer months approximately every two years.  World language teachers from the Commonwealth come to these two or three-day workshops to learn how to best conduct and assess the interview process at the lower levels of the oral proficiency scale.  Members of the Washington and Lee University and Lexington communities volunteer to be interviewed and play roles significant to this sophisticated learning process.
