GEOL 105 Earth Lab: Geology of Virginia 2018

Students learned about the geology of Virginia by visiting field sites in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Valley and Ridge Province (the Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia), Central Virginia and the Virginia coastline (this included camping on the Eastern Shore), Harrisonburg to study volcanics, and Rockbridge County to study streams, erosion, and landscape evolution. As you can tell, the majority of class time took place in the field where students were able to directly observe the geology of Virginia. After participating in the Geology of Virginia, students knew about the Grenville Orogeny, the formation of Pangea, the evolution of the Piedmont and Coastal Plain, and recent landscape evolution -- and about good field gear.
