Renewing Your W&L Aid

Returning students receiving need-based grant assistance must re-apply each year.  Please be aware that you will use your 2018 federal tax returns for the income questions in your 2020-21 academic year application.

Eligibility for any federally funded need-based grant, federal student and/or parent loan, or federal work-study requires the submission of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid.)  FAFSA applications should be submitted by May 1 to ensure adequate time to process federal aid. You are not required to submit the institutional need-based application to receive federal aid.

The application for institutionally funded need-based grant (and the W&L Promise) consists of all the documents listed below including the FAFSA. The application must be submitted by the Financial Aid Application deadline if you wish to be considered for institutionally funded need-based grant or the W&L Promise.

October 1, 2019

The 2020-21 FAFSA becomes available online for completion.  The FAFSA is the only application required for federal financial aid awards.

May 1, 2020
All documents required for your institutional need-based grant application must be received by the Financial Aid Office.

  • 2018 federal tax returns including all schedules, W-2s, 1099s, etc for parents and students
  • 2018 federal tax returns for businesses including all schedules, K1, worksheets, etc, if applicable

Please note we do not accept application materials via fax or email.  Please mail to W&L Office of Financial Aid, 204 West Washington Street, Lexington, VA 24450.  You can also submit documents via electronic upload.

Late June
Financial aid award letters will be available via the web at Aid Status Online as applications are completed.  Students who submit their applications after the deadlines will receive their award letters later in the summer and will not be eligible for appeal or reconsideration.

Monitoring Your Status Online

Students are expected to monitor their Aid Status Online account to stay informed of what documents or actions are required of them.  After logging into the site, students should navigate to the "Items Requiring Your Attention" link to view current document status information. All financial aid documents currently required of the student will be listed along with a status of received or not received.  Many documents can be uploaded electronically to our site.  To do so, click the upload button next to the document you would like to submit.  You will be prompted to navigate to the document's location on your computer so it can be uploaded to our website.
