Applying for Aid

University Need-Based Grant

At Washington and Lee University we are committed to meet 100% of your institutionally determined financial need.  We meet this need using a combination of generous university grant, other grant, and a $2,000 work study award.  No loans will be included in your award package to meet your calculated need. Eligibility for university need-based grant or for The W&L Promise is based on a careful assessment of the family's income and assets.

Need-based grants are available to all eligible students who complete the required financial aid documents by the relevant deadline. Please review our deadlines and application process, and contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Applying for Merit Scholarships

All merit based scholarships are awarded through the the Johnson Scholarship program.  This includes the Johnson Scholarship and the many other named merit scholarships listed in the university catalog.  The Johnson Scholarship program, which is administered through the Office of Admissions, requires a separate application that must be submitted by December 1, 2016  for prospective undergraduates to be considered for this award.  This one application is your application for all W&L merit based scholarships and you do not need to apply separately for any other university merit awards. . Selection for these awards is based on achievement in the classroom, leadership potential, and accomplishments in extracurricular endeavors.

Families with financial need are encouraged to apply for need-based aid as well. Merit awards for students with need can range from tuition, room, and board to the full cost of attendance.

To ensure that you explore all possible sources of W&L funding, we encourage you to complete both the need-based aid and merit scholarship applications.
